Are you a first-time mom? Congratulations! Whether you’ve never changed a diaper before or always having issues changing your baby, ranging from putting it on backward to an unexpected shower of urine from baby boys. The following steps will enable you to master the art of diaper changing and also, correct your mistakes before you know it.
There are two major types, the cloth, and the disposable diapers, your choice is dependent on your lifestyle or the material but the necessary steps of changing your baby remain the same for the two.
MATERIALS NEEDED TO CHANGE A BABY DIAPER
- Clean diapers: It’s nice to have more than one clean diaper during this process.
- Cotton balls, wipes or wet cloths: Use the clean cotton ball and warm water for newborns. Get moist wipes that are hypoallergenic and free of fragrance and alcohol for babies older than one month.
- Ointments and/or baby lotions: this is mainly used to soothe diaper rash, take note that you can’t use rash creams and ointments with cloth diapers.
- A new set of clothes. This is in case of a leaked diaper or any form of dirt.
- Waterproof pants or clean diaper wraps: This is necessary if you are using cloth diapers.
- Toys or any other forms of distraction: Well, you know how it is with restless babies.
- Your baby needs your smile, tender touch, and voice.
With your materials on the ground, the following steps are needed to change your baby’s diaper:
- Gently place your baby on a clean and safe surface: You must have sterilized or washed your hands before starting this. It could be a changing table, a bed, a crib, floor etc. Make sure you pad with a towel or any other protective cloth when using a flat surface. Always make sure you keep one hand on the baby throughout the process. This cannot be overemphasized, even strapped-in babies should be at arm’s reach.
- Cleaning: Unfasten the diaper on the baby and check the area, there are two conditions involved:
-If the diaper is wet, fold the dirty diaper and wipe the area.
-If it’s soiled, use the diaper itself to wipe as much soil as possible then fold it as described above. With your hand still on the baby, lift the legs, clean the baby’s front and back thoroughly with warm water and wipes. Check the description above.
Kindly note the following for the gender of the baby:
-For a boy: Gently clean around the genital organ. Point his genital organ downward to reduce leaks. Again, keep the genital area covered with a clean cloth to avoid surprise peeing during cleaning.
– For a girl child: wipe your baby from the front to the back to avoid getting poop in the vaginal area, this can cause bacterial infection for the baby.
-Disposing of diaper
Wrap your disposable diaper and fasten it before you throw into the trash or any other forms of disposal method you use. Do not flush it down the toilet! For cloth diapers, put it into an airtight bucket till your laundry day, it is advisable to wash immediately.
-Place a clean diaper under your baby’s bottom and make sure a large area of the baby’s bottom is covered by the diaper.
-As recommended by the doctor, apply any ointments or creams for rashes.
-Gently close the new diaper by pulling the front part up over his or her belly and pulling the tabs open and around to the fastening surface. Make sure it’s not too tight to avoid leaks.
- Dressing: This option solely depends on you as a parent but it is pertinent you have enough set of baby clothes at your disposal. Change the baby’s clothes if you discover any case of leaks or other forms of dirt.
- Washing: As a mother, who might dabble into cooking anytime soon, take a moment to wash your hands after changing your baby’s diaper.
-Wash the changing surface, if possible. This would help avoid recontamination if your baby is ill.
The following tips are essential for your daily activities
- It is of utmost importance to check your baby’s diaper frequently, change it after every poop or probable, after every nap.
