Do you remember your childhood days? Well, I can’t forget the incident that never allowed me to be myself until now. I loved reading stories, novels, etc, but my father never allowed me to read those books. He always forced me to read technology-related books because he wanted me to become a doctor. But as I grew up, I didn’t understand the concepts of science. This is why I was not able to make my career in this field and ended up being a yoga teacher. I totally regret that my father has never allowed me to read whatever I wanted to read. Yes, this is the reason that I have become a yoga teacher. Though I love teaching and helping others to achieve their dreams, I never wanted to do whatever I’m doing at present.
In the beginning, I made a decision to sacrifice everything, but now I just can’t forget my childhood days. Now being a parent I don’t want this to happen with my kids. I want that difficult situation that happened with me in my childhood to never, ever happen in their life.
So, I decided to write down my words and make people aware of the importance of letting kids choose their own books. This article would hopefully make a change by giving people a new perspective and help them understand why it is necessary to let kids choose their own books.
Remember children have an empty mind, they do not know what is good and what’s not. You have to help them in finding their interest. If you leave a kid in the library and ask him to choose a book, he’ll surely choose the one that has an attractive cover or a comic. But if you help him understand what science books or math books, or history books are all about, only then he’ll be able to make a final decision.
Letting kids read whatever they want to read and understand their mind and interest would help them be more creative and innovative. Creativity and innovation are the qualities that people need these days. A child who loves to read only because he wants to know something the best for himself would definitely show a unique curiosity in his mind.
Helpful tips for parents to help children choose books of their interests that will make them read again and again:
- You should start inculcating a fact in your child’s mind from the age when he starts reading that we read for a purpose whether it is just for enjoyment or to learn something.
- You should encourage your child to read and let them read whatever they want to because at this stage it is important to make a habit rather than reading books of one type.
- If your child chooses an inappropriate book, you should explain to them that they cannot choose it now, but can choose it when they grow up.
- If they choose a book that is beyond their reading ability, you have two options. You can either sit with them and make them understand concepts or provide them a simpler version.
- If you find that your child likes reading books of a particular author, bring more books to him.
